Fillings

A tooth may require a filling if it has become affected by dental decay. Depending on the size and location of the cavity, there are a variety of materials that can be used.

If dental decay is left untreated, it may result in the progression of the decay into the nerve (pulp) of the tooth, which may require root canal therapy or extraction. In worst-case scenarios, the tooth may be unrestorable and thus require extraction.

Lab-made ceramic inlay or Onlays are an alternate option to a direct filling. Ceramics are a more durable material compared to composite resin and usually provide better protection for a tooth weakened by decay or cracks.

Extractions

A tooth may require an extraction if it has been compromised by extensive decay or loss of bone support due to gum disease or infection. Most dental extractions can be carried out under local anesthetic by a general dentist. Complicating factors such as curved roots, nearby anatomical structures, impaction, or decay extending under the gum may require the tooth to be removed surgically. Your dentist will be able to determine the best procedure after assessing the tooth with an accompanying x-ray.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a treatment option for teeth that have had nerve damage due to decay or trauma.

Root canal therapy usually requires more than one visit depending on the number of nerve canals inside the tooth, as well as the severity of the infection. Treatment consists of numbing the tooth and removing decay of the infected/inflamed nerve (pulp tissue). The root canal system is cleaned and shaped to ensure the tooth has been disinfected adequately. Finally, a rubber filling is placed inside the root canal system to seal it from infection. It is then highly recommended that a crown be placed over the tooth to protect the weakened tooth structure underneath in order to prevent re-contamination of the root canal treatment.

Gum disease treatment

The most common types of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis is inflammation that affects only the gums, causing redness, swelling, and tenderness. It is a reversible condition once a professional dental clean and adequate home oral hygiene is carried out. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a more chronic condition and irreversible form of gum disease leading to inflammation of the gums that affected the bone surrounding the teeth. If left untreated, it may destroy the attachment that holds the tooth to the bone, leaving a ‘pocket’ where bacteria can collect and cause further bone loss until the tooth becomes loose and eventually requires extraction. Treating periodontal (gum) disease will involve a “deep clean” to remove the bacteria that is causing the inflammation in the gum pockets around the teeth. If necessary, a referral to a gum specialist (periodontist) may be required.

Signs of gum disease include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Redness/swelling
  • Receding gums
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Loose teeth

Recent clinical studies have shown that poor gum health has been linked to a higher incidence of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Therefore, it is crucial that this condition is not left untreated as it can to poor general health outcomes in addition to poor oral health.

Dentures and repairs/relines

Dentures are replacements for natural teeth that have been lost. They can either be full (complete) dentures or partial dentures made either with a metal or acrylic framework. Dentures can be removed and put back into the mouth.

Dentures are a suitable option when many teeth are missing on both sides. Dentures usually feel strange initially and may require slight adjustments as they settle in the mouth. Well-fitted dentures will go a long way to restoring a patient’s smile and function such as chewing food.

Have you broken your denture or lost another tooth since your denture was made? Is your denture feeling loose or unstable on the gums? Come in for a consultation to see if a repair or reline is possible for your denture.
