A crown is a tooth-shaped cover placed over a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. Many people also call it a cap.
In this blog, we will discuss Dental Crowns and Bridges.

Crowns can be placed for a variety of reasons:

  • If a tooth is severely damaged by decay, or if a tooth doesn’t have enough structure to hold a filling
  • To hold together parts of a cracked tooth
  • To improve the appearance of misshapen or discoloured teeth
  • Protect teeth after root canal therapy is completed

Crowns can be made of:

  • All metal (e.g. gold)
  • All ceramic
  • Zirconia
  • Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)
  • Porcelain fused to zirconia

The type of material used for a crown depends on how your teeth meet (occlusion), whether you grind your teeth, and the location of the tooth in your mouth (front vs. back).

A bridge is made to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges can be supported by natural teeth, implants or a combination of teeth and implants. They are fixed devices that are not removable like a traditional denture.

A bridge is made by creating a crown for the teeth on either side of the space and placing a false tooth between the crowns.
